The Central Line: Mumbai and Beyond

The Central line is the main reason Thane station stays so busy all day. Slow and fast locals run south through Mulund, Ghatkopar and Dadar to CSMT. Fast trains skip many stops, so you save a lot of time on longer trips.

Heading north, locals run to Kalyan and then split in two directions. One branch goes towards Karjat and Khopoli, while the other goes towards Kasara. Air-conditioned locals also run on this stretch, which makes long trips more comfortable in summer.

The Trans-Harbour Line to Navi Mumbai

All trans-harbour trains begin or end at Thane, so you will usually find a seat here. The line runs through Airoli, Rabale, Ghansoli and Turbhe before splitting towards Vashi or Panvel. Trains to Panvel pass Nerul, CBD Belapur and Kharghar on the way.

This line has no fast trains, yet it is the quickest way into Navi Mumbai at peak hours. For people who work in the Airoli or Ghansoli IT belts, it avoids the busy Airoli bridge completely.

Typical Travel Times From Thane Station

Destination Line Typical Time
Mulund Central slow About 5 minutes
Ghatkopar Central fast 15 to 20 minutes
Dadar Central fast 25 to 30 minutes
CSMT Central fast 40 to 45 minutes
Kalyan Central fast 20 to 25 minutes
Airoli Trans-harbour About 10 minutes

These are typical off-peak times, so check the latest timetable on the M-Indicator app or the railway website.

Long-Distance Trains From Thane

Many long-distance trains stop at Thane, so you rarely need to go into Mumbai to catch one. Trains towards Pune, Nashik, Goa, Nagpur and the south stop here each day. The station also serves trains on the Konkan route, which suits trips to Ratnagiri and Goa.

Boarding at Thane can save you an hour or more of travel into Mumbai. Check your ticket for the Thane halt when you book, since not every train stops here.

Thane West and Thane East Exits

Thane station has exits on both sides, and choosing the right one saves you time. The west side opens onto Station Road and the busy market area. It also has the elevated deck for TMT buses, built under the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme.

The east side opens towards Kopri and the Eastern Express Highway. It is often less crowded, and many cabs pick up from here. Skywalks at both ends of the station link the foot overbridges with nearby roads.

Buses, Autos and Cabs

Thane Municipal Transport runs buses from the station deck to most parts of the city. Routes cover Ghodbunder Road, Kapurbawdi, Majiwada, Wagle Estate and Vartak Nagar. NMMT buses also run towards Navi Mumbai, while state transport buses leave from depots close by.

Share autos and meter autos wait outside both exits through the day. App cabs work well too, but pickups on the west side can be slow at peak hours. Walk to a quieter lane nearby if your driver struggles to reach you.

Road Links to the Station

Thane station sits close to three main roads that link it with the rest of the region. The Eastern Express Highway runs just east of the station, towards Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Ghodbunder Road begins at Kapurbawdi, a short drive north, and runs towards Borivali and Gaimukh. The Mumbai-Nashik Highway also starts nearby, linking you with Bhiwandi and Nashik.

How the Metro Will Change Station Trips

Thane station has no metro line today, but that will change over the next few years. The 29 km Ring Metro will have an underground stop called Thane Junction, linked with the station. It targets 2029 and will connect the station with Wagle Estate, Manpada and Balkum.

Metro Line 4 will run along the Eastern Express Highway, with stops at Teen Hath Naka and Cadbury. You will be able to reach the station from these stops by a short ride.

A New Station Between Thane and Mulund

In May 2026, the Railway Ministry gave in-principle approval for a new station between Thane and Mulund. It will sit on land that once belonged to the Thane Mental Hospital. Planners expect it to cut crowds at Thane station by about 31%.

The new station will serve people from Ghodbunder Road, Pokhran Road and Wagle Estate. It will have parking, a deck and a bus terminal, though no opening date has been fixed yet.

Tips for Using Thane Station at Peak Hours

  • Travel before 8 am or after 10:30 am to avoid the worst crowds towards Mumbai.
  • Board trans-harbour trains at Thane, since they start here and you can find a seat.
  • Use a smart card or the UTS app, so you skip long ticket queues.
  • Pick the east exit for cabs, since the west side traffic moves slowly.
  • Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket in crowded coaches.

Living Near Thane Station vs Living a Short Drive Away

Homes right next to the station give you the fastest train access. But the area is crowded, older and has fewer large gated projects. Many buyers now choose homes a short drive away, where they get more space and green areas.

Kapurbawdi is a good example of this balance for families and working couples. It sits a short drive from the station, yet it also has its own metro interchange coming soon.

Reaching Thane Station From Prestige Falcon City Thane

Prestige Falcon City Thane sits at Kapurbawdi Junction, opposite Wonder Mall on Ghodbunder Road. The station is about 4 to 6 km away, a 15 to 25 minute drive outside peak hours. TMT buses, autos and cabs run between Kapurbawdi and the station through the day.

Once Metro Lines 4 and 5 open, residents will get a metro interchange at Kapurbawdi itself. So you can choose the local train, the metro or the highway, based on where you work. The township spreads across 15 acres, with about 40% open space and a 1.2-acre clubhouse.

It is in pre-launch, with RERA registration in process and possession planned for December 2031. You can see nearby links on the location page, or read our Thane West commute guide.
