Metro Line 4 and 4A

Metro Line 4 runs along Ghodbunder Road and the Eastern Express Highway towards Wadala. Trial runs have resumed on the 10.5 km stretch from Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction. MMRDA hopes to open it around Diwali or by the end of 2026.

This line matters most for homes along Ghodbunder Road and near Cadbury Junction. It will give them their first rail link to central Mumbai.

Metro Line 5

Metro Line 5 will start at Kapurbawdi and run towards Bhiwandi and later Kalyan. Its first phase covers 12.2 km and seven stations up to Dhamankar Naka. Reports in February 2026 said about 97% of the structural work was complete, with a December 2026 target.

At first, trains will run using stabling lines, since the permanent car shed will take longer. Kapurbawdi will become an interchange with Metro Line 4, which helps residents near Majiwada and Kapurbawdi most.

Thane Integral Ring Metro

The Ring Metro is a 29 km loop with 22 stations, built to serve the inner city. It will pass through Wagle Estate, Manpada, Waghbil and Balkum, with two underground stations near Thane railway station. The project costs about ₹12,200 crore and targets 2029.

This line will link many older parts of Thane West that have no metro plan today. For families in these areas, it could replace long auto rides to the station. It will also connect with Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 5 at interchange stations.

A New Station Between Thane and Mulund

In May 2026, the Railway Ministry gave in-principle approval for a new suburban station between Thane and Mulund. It will serve Ghodbunder Road, Pokhran Road and Wagle Estate. Officials expect it to cut crowds at Thane station by about 31% and at Mulund by about 24%.

The plan includes parking, a deck and a bus terminal. A detailed project report comes next, with the cost now expected to exceed ₹245 crore. So there is no firm date yet for when the new station will open to the public.

Roads: Coastal Road and Twin Tunnel

The Thane Coastal Road will run along the creek to Gaimukh, costing about ₹2,727 crore. It should move heavy trucks off Ghodbunder Road and cut travel between its ends to about 15 minutes. About 28% was complete in May 2026, with a December 2028 target.

The Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel will run about 11.8 km under Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It should cut the trip to Borivali from over an hour to about 15 minutes. Reports put its cost between about ₹14,400 crore and ₹16,600 crore.

Which Areas of Thane West Gain Most?

Area Main Projects Helping It Expected Benefit
Ghodbunder Road belt Metro 4, coastal road, twin tunnel Faster links to Mumbai and the western suburbs
Majiwada and Kapurbawdi Metro 4 and 5 interchange Easy switch between two metro lines
Wagle Estate Ring Metro, new Thane-Mulund station Better access for office workers
Pokhran Road and Vasant Vihar Ring Metro, new station Rail access without going to Thane station
Balkum and Kolshet Ring Metro, coastal road Quicker trips along the creek side
Thane station area Ring Metro, new station easing crowds Less crowding at peak hours

Year-by-Year Outlook

  • End of 2026: Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 5 target their first stretches.
  • 2027: Metro Line 4 opens further sections in phases.
  • 2028: The Thane Coastal Road targets completion by December.
  • 2028 to 2029: The twin tunnel could open, based on MMRDA's plans.
  • 2029: The Ring Metro and the bullet train's Thane station target opening.

Large projects in the Mumbai region often run late. So treat these dates as targets, and check the MMRDA website every few months.

How to Track These Projects Yourself

Dates change often, so it pays to check progress on your own. These simple steps help you stay up to date.

  • Visit the MMRDA website for news on metro lines, the coastal road and the tunnel.
  • Follow local news sites in Thane, which report trial runs and opening dates quickly.
  • Drive past work sites every few months to see how far each project has moved.
  • Ask builders for proof when they quote travel times based on projects that are not yet open.

A project that shows steady visible progress is far more likely to finish close to its target. Long gaps with no work on site are a warning sign.

What This Means for Home Buyers

Better transport tends to lift both rents and prices, especially within walking distance of new stations. Areas with more than one new link, such as Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, may see the biggest change. Buying before these links open gives you the best chance to gain from them.

The main risk is delay, since big projects here often run late. Choose a home you would still like to live in, even if one or two projects run late.

Where Prestige Falcon City Thane Fits

Projects with later possession dates line up well with this pipeline. Prestige Falcon City Thane, planned in Thane West, targets possession in December 2031. If the projects above keep to their targets, most should be running by then.

The township spreads across 15 acres, with about 40% open space. It is in pre-launch, with RERA registration in process. You can check connectivity on the location page, or read our Ghodbunder Road pipeline guide.
