Between 2026 and 2030, Ghodbunder Road will get five major upgrades that should change how you travel. Metro Line 4 and 4A could start running on the first Thane stretch by the end of 2026. The Thane Coastal Road targets December 2028, and the Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel should follow around 2028 to 2029. The 29 km Thane Ring Metro aims to open by 2029. Road widening is also under way, while Metro Line 10 to Mira Road is at an early stage.

Below you will find what each project does and where it stands today. We also explain what it means for people living here.

Metro Line 4 and 4A

Metro Line 4 is the project residents are waiting for most. It runs as an elevated line along Ghodbunder Road and on to Wadala in the island city. Line 4A extends it a short way from Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh.

Trial runs have resumed on the 10.5 km stretch from Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction. The line received its RDSO safety certificate in June 2026. MMRDA hopes to open this stretch around Diwali or by the end of 2026, after final safety checks.

Once the full line opens, it will link with other metro and rail lines. That should make trips to Ghatkopar, Vikhroli and central Mumbai far more predictable than by road.

Thane Integral Ring Metro

The Thane Ring Metro is a 29 km loop with 22 stations, planned to serve the inner city. It will run through areas such as Wagle Estate, Manpada, Waghbil and Balkum. Two stations near Thane railway station will be underground.

The central and state governments approved it in 2024, and civil work contracts are now under way. At about ₹12,200 crore, it aims to open by 2029. It will link with Metro Line 4, so residents can reach Thane station and Wagle Estate without driving.

Thane Coastal Road

The Thane Coastal Road will run 13.45 km along the creek, from the Balkum side to Gaimukh. It is a six-lane road, partly elevated, costing about ₹2,727 crore. About 28% of the work was complete in May 2026, with a target date of December 2028.

This road should take heavy trucks off Ghodbunder Road, which is the main cause of daily jams. Local leaders expect travel between its two ends to drop from 45 to 60 minutes to about 15.

Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel

The twin tunnel will run under Sanjay Gandhi National Park to link Thane with Borivali. Its total length is about 11.8 km, and the cost is about ₹14,401 crore. Two large tunnel boring machines began digging work in 2026.

MMRDA aims to finish the project within about three years, which points to around 2028 to 2029. Once open, it should cut the trip from 60 to 90 minutes to about 15. That puts the western suburbs, with their offices and malls, within easy reach. For many families, it will also make weekend trips to Borivali and beyond far simpler.

Ghodbunder Road Widening and Metro Line 10

In September 2025, the state announced plans to widen Ghodbunder Road into a much wider corridor. Work has faced delays, mainly due to utility lines that need shifting. Once complete, it should ease the worst bottlenecks along the road.

Metro Line 10 will link Gaimukh with Mira Road, joining Line 4 to the western metro network. It is approved but still at an early stage, with no firm completion date yet.

Year-by-Year Timeline

  • Late 2026: Metro Line 4 and 4A may open between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction.
  • 2027: Further sections of Metro Line 4 move towards opening in phases.
  • 2028: The Thane Coastal Road targets completion by December.
  • 2028 to 2029: The Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel could open, based on MMRDA's three-year aim.
  • 2029: The Thane Ring Metro targets its first services.
  • 2030 and beyond: Metro Line 10 and the full road widening take shape.

Large projects in the Mumbai region often run late, so treat these as targets, not promises. Check the MMRDA website every few months for the latest progress on each one.

What This Means for Home Buyers

Better transport usually lifts both rents and prices, especially near new metro stations. Homes close to Line 4 stations may see demand rise as soon as the first stretch opens. The coastal road and tunnel should make daily life on Ghodbunder Road far less stressful.

Timing matters as much as the projects themselves. If you buy now and the projects finish by 2029, you enter before most of the price impact. The risk is delay, so choose a home you would be happy with even if one project slips.

Where Prestige Falcon City Thane Fits

New projects with late possession dates line up well with this pipeline. Prestige Falcon City Thane, planned in Thane West, targets possession in December 2031. By then, most of the projects above should be running, if they keep to their current targets.

It spreads across 15 acres, with about 40% open space and a 1.2-acre clubhouse. It is in pre-launch, with RERA registration in process. You can check connectivity on the location page.
