How the Road Got Its Name

The name comes from two Marathi words, "ghoda" for horse and "bunder" for port. Centuries ago, traders brought Arab and Persian horses by sea and landed them at this spot. The village that grew around the port became Ghodbunder, and the road took its name.

The Portuguese began building a fort here in 1550 to guard the creek and the trade route. The present Ghodbunder Fort was finished around 1730. The Marathas under Chimaji Appa took it in 1737, and the British later ran a district office there.

Today the Archaeological Survey of India looks after the fort, and restoration work is under way. In June 2024, workers found an underground chamber during the work, which drew fresh interest from history lovers. The fort overlooks the creek and makes a popular short trip for families and photographers.

A Green Road Between the Hills and the Creek

Few city roads in the Mumbai region offer this much greenery. The Yeoor Hills and the national park run along one side, while Vasai Creek lies on the other. The road climbs a small ghat near Gaimukh, where the hills come right up to its edge.

This setting has made the area popular with walkers, cyclists and weekend trekkers. The Yeoor Hills trails are a favourite for morning hikes and birdwatching in the monsoon. Many homes along the road also enjoy hill or forest views, which is rare this close to Mumbai.

Big Townships and a Busy Property Market

Ghodbunder Road is one of the most active housing markets in Thane. Large townships such as Hiranandani Estate, Lodha Splendora and Godrej Emerald sit along its length. New launches keep coming, which gives buyers a wide choice of sizes and budgets.

Square Yards puts the average sale rate here at about ₹15,450 per sq ft in 2026. Average rents run near ₹55 per sq ft a month. Buyers like the mix of lower prices than Mumbai, more open space and quick access to both highways.

Leisure, Shopping and Family Outings

The road is also known for its fun places, which draw visitors from all over Thane and Mumbai.

Place What It Is Why People Go
Tikuji-ni-Wadi Amusement and water park near Manpada Rides, dinosaur park and a 20-acre green campus
Suraj Water Park Water park near Waghbil Slides and wave pools for summer outings
R Mall Shopping mall at Manpada Brands, food court and a cinema
Ghodbunder Fort Portuguese-era fort History, creek views and photography
Yeoor Hills Forest hills beside the national park Treks, walks and birdwatching

Viviana Mall and Korum Mall sit a short drive away on the Eastern Express Highway. Together, these give residents plenty of weekend options without a long trip into Mumbai.

Schools and Hospitals Nearby

Families find good schools within easy reach of most townships on the road. Popular names include Hiranandani Foundation School, Podar International School and DAV Public School. Between them, they offer CBSE, ICSE and international boards to suit different families.

For healthcare, residents rely on hospitals such as Jupiter Hospital, Hiranandani Hospital and Titan Hospital. Most sit within a short drive of the main stretch, which matters in an emergency.

Metro Line 4 and Road Upgrades

Metro Line 4 will run along Ghodbunder Road, linking Kasarvadavali with Wadala in the island city. Trial runs have resumed on the Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction stretch in Thane. MMRDA hopes to open it for passengers around Diwali or by the end of 2026.

The road itself is also changing, with several big upgrades planned or under way. Toll collection on the road ended in February 2021, which cut costs for daily drivers. In September 2025, the state also announced plans to widen it into a 14-lane corridor. The planned Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel will add a second, faster route to the western suburbs.

The Downside: Traffic at Peak Hours

Ghodbunder Road is also famous, or rather infamous, for its traffic jams. It carries heavy trucks between Gujarat and the Mumbai region, along with office traffic from the townships. Metro and flyover work has added to the slow-downs in recent years.

Residents often plan their day around peak hours, especially in the morning and evening. Once the metro opens and the widening finishes, commutes should become far easier. If you travel to work daily, pick a home close to a planned metro station. That choice can save you more time each week than almost any other feature of a flat.
